The African National Congress enjoyed versatile support of our country during three decades of its struggle against the apartheid regim. Often it was provided when and where others could not or would not do it. However, in the early 1990s, the top leadership of the USSR and then Russia began actively setting the connection with the South African authorities who were leaving the political scene, and that hampered the development of bilateral relations after the ANC came to power.

Nevertheless, gradually, these ties have become stronger, especially after the adoption of the Joint Declaration on the establishment of a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the Russian Federation and the Republic of South Africa.
