Trade Unions and the Political Process in Southern Africa

Author:

Lyubov Prokopenko

Abstract:

The article examines the influence of trade unions on the political process in the countries of Southern Africa. The role of trade unions as active subjects of political relations in a number of countries in the region is revealed. Particular attention is paid to their versatility in the time of political modernization, as in some cases (South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Namibia) while maintaining their primary function of the workers’rights protectors, trade unions act as social and political movements. They also became a forge for political staff: many trade union leaders started their political careers as party leaders and members of parliament.

Keywords:

trade unions, South African countries, workers’ rights, political process, interaction with authorities, political modernization, parties, politization, solidarity of trade unions, gender equality
