Abstract:

Besides large-scale commercial farms, the South African agriculture includes a large number of households, engaged in different extent of agricultural production. This paper provides an analysis of various indicators of agricultural households, based on national statistical data in South Africa. There is evidence that most rural households in South Africa have a limited involvement in agricultural activities. At the same time, with proper access to resources (land and state support), these household could form the basis of a new agrarian structure with a significant contribution of small-scale production.
