African Trans-Border Migration and Problems of International Security

Irina Abramova

The article is dedicated to new trends in migration processes through the Africa-EU countries and regional security issues. The study analyzes the main reasons, quantitative and qualitative characteristics and the consequences of Africa trans-border migration, including the risks of crime rising, growing terrorist threats, worsening social problems and ethnic conflicts. The author gives a critical assessment to a package of measures developed by the EU member states to strengthen border and immigration controls and tightening of the reception of the refugees. The author believes that these measures are not sufficient without addressing the main issue – to overcome the social and economic inequalities in Africa and to put an end to armed conflicts on the African continent which force people to flee their homes and seek shelter abroad.
