Abstract:

For decades, Sudan has remained one of the most unstable countries in Africa, the reason being the combined effect of its colonial legacy, ethnic fragmentation, and the ongoing struggle between military and civilian elites for power and control over natural resources. These factors have repeatedly led to crises that were detrimental not only to the development of state institutions and the national economy but also regional stability. This article examines the economic impact of the civil war in Sudan, which began on April 15, 2023, following armed clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), commanded by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) led by Mohamed Hamdan Daglo. The paper aims to analyze the impact of the conflict on Sudan’s national economy and the economic stability of the Horn of Africa. It also notes how the latest political confrontation evolved into a new civil war. The research draws on statistical data from international organizations, analytical reports, media publications, academic literature, and the author’s field observations. The findings demonstrate that the ongoing war has led to the destruction of industrial infrastructure, destabilization of the financial system, hyperinflation, disruption of foreign trade, and the erosion of human capital. At the regional level, the conflict has resulted in the breakdown of trade links, rising logistics costs, a deepening food crisis, and intensified migratory pressure. The study concludes that the Sudanese civil war has become a catalyst for structural shifts that have weakened the region’s economic cooperation and increased its dependence on external assistance.
